Washington State Arts Commission presents

Poetry Out Loud - 2013 Washington State Finals

March 9, 2013 at 1:00 p.m.

Theatre on the Square

Poetry Out Loud is a national poetry recitation contest for high school students - a program that builds on the resurgence of poetry as an oral art form and engages students in the dynamic aspects of poetry performance. This year, 76 schools participated in Washington State.

On Saturday, March 9th, thirteen students - the top performers from seven regional finals held across the state - will recite poetry in competition for the state title, and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to participate in the Poetry Out Loud national finals.

In addition to the student recitations, this event includes live jazz music by the Kareem Kandi band, as well as a reading by our current Washington State Poet Laureate, Kathleen Flenniken.

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with state arts agencies to support Poetry Out Loud, which encourages the nation's youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance. This exciting program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.

This event is FREE and open to the public.
