Adapted from the best-selling novel by Amy Tan, The Joy Luck Club is the story of four Mahjong playing mothers, all from different provinces in China, and their relationships with their children. Despite the many generational and societal differences among them, there still is much common ground between mothers and daughters, as well as shared respect and love. This classic mother-daughter tale weaves universal themes of sacrifice, strength, wishes for a better life, hope and love.
“. . . a chorus of eight voices telling scores of tightly woven stories that only at the very end come together in a single vision of the rich complexity of family affections . . . when they laugh, we laugh and when, more often, they suffer, we grieve.”
“…its perfect-pitch instinct for the cultural vibe…is so immaculately dead-on that it nearly transcends criticism.”
